TRIFFID aims to minimize loss of human life in a wide range of adverse scenarios. This objective will be accomplished through integrating autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) with a significant level of cognitive autonomy/artificial intelligence (AI) into first responders’ (FRs) procedures. The main aspiration is to reduce the exposure of their personnel to harm and provide them with real-time reliable information from the disaster scene. More specifically, TRIFFID aims to optimize First Responder field operations through cutting-edge robotic reconnaissance, integrating autonomous platforms into European Civil Protection procedures, while addressing technological, operational, and training aspects for seamless adoption.
The project’s main objectives are as follows:
- Developing an advanced AI-powered hybrid UGV+UAV platform: Enhancing operational efficiency by creating an autonomous hybrid system combining unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for smart remote reconnaissance. This platform will be designed to navigate dynamic disaster scenes, respond to changing human directives, and improve decision-making in challenging environments, with the goal of minimizing human supervision in harsh conditions.
- Improving situational awareness for first responders: Leveraging advanced robotic perception technologies, Earth Observation (EO) data analysis, and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) to significantly enhance situational awareness in disaster scenarios. The system will integrate real-time data from multiple sensors, providing first responders with a comprehensive understanding of the environment, while ensuring that human safety is prioritized during complex, dynamic operations.
- Promoting the integration of robotic and AI solutions: Driving the adoption of robotic and AI systems in field operations by developing relevant standards, protocols, and policies that ensure the safe, ethical, and effective use of technology in disaster response. This objective aims to ensure compliance with legal and privacy regulations while fostering collaboration with the European tech industry to strengthen innovation and integration in the field of civil protection (CP).
- Delivering and showcasing the TRIFFID system: Building and deploying the TRIFFID system, demonstrating its real-world effectiveness in supporting first responders in disaster scenarios. The system will incorporate advanced AI-driven decision-making tools, real-time data analysis, and seamless integration with human operators, showcasing its capacity to improve operational outcomes, enhance safety, and streamline disaster response efforts.
ITML’s role in the project
In the TRIFFID project, ITML plays a multifaceted role, contributing to both business and technical aspects. As the leader in innovation and exploitation, ITML supports the commercialization and utilization of project outcomes. On the technical side, ITML leads all activities related to non-visual data analysis, such as speech and sound, by developing and integrating AI and data processing techniques. Through these efforts, ITML shapes pioneering solutions for disaster response and drives the development of advanced technologies for autonomous robotic reconnaissance. ITML also collaborates closely with project partners in building the TRIFFID system, ensuring a comprehensive approach that combines sociotechnical integration and participatory design.
